From Niche Genre to Mainstream Success

Despite a mini-revival of dance radio in America in the early 2000s, only a few dance/electronic artists managed to crack the Hot 100 each year in that decade.

To be fair, the playing field has changed in the open era of the chart.  Since December 1998, when the national Hot 100 was expanded to include all the major radio formats, it’s become much harder for a dance track—or any top 40 song—to do well.  That’s because the all-genre chart—especially the lower half—is populated with R&B/hip-hop and country songs, thanks to the considerable size of the radio panel representing those formats.  For a song to go the distance, it needs strong sales and/or multi-format radio support.  And starting in 2013, a viral video or Internet meme can also help (refer to major chart changes below).  As audio streaming emerged as the preferred music consumption choice by the mid-2010s, streaming in general is as important as radio airplay.

The success of David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Zedd, Avicii, DJ Snake, The Chainsmokers, Major Lazer, Clean Bandit, and Marshmello changed the landscape a bit for the 2010s.  Indeed, 2013 was a breakthrough year when nine dance artists scored 10 top 10 hits at top 40 radio, led by Daft Punk and Avicii.  Three years later, The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” became the biggest crossover hit by a bona fide dance artist since Chic’s “Le Freak” in 1978 (see top crossover hits below).  The duo also scored the first No. 1 album by a dance/electronic artist in 20 years since The Prodigy’s The Fat of the Land in 1997 (not counting Sia, AFI, and the usual suspects).  The list below excludes such established pop stars as Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Lady Gaga.  Instead, you’ll find their dance-leaning hits in the Honorable Mention section.  Read on for more explanation of this catchall category.

A song receives an honorable mention if 1) at least one of the producers is a dance artist or someone closely identified with dance music, 2) it samples/reproduces/interpolates/remakes a dance track, or 3) it has a dance-leaning sound.  Case in point:  No discussion of the impact of dance music would be complete without mentioning The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling.”  This international smash really ushered in the stateside resurgence of dance music at top 40 radio back in 2009.  While it’s technically not a crossover hit, you can’t overlook the fact that it’s co-produced and co-written by Guetta.  It’s true that he’s listed as one of the song’s six writers, but as one of the two producers, his imprint is hard to miss, not to mention the intro is very similar to his own “Love Is Gone.”

Why do we put Mike Posner’s “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” in the main section and Coldplay’s “Hymn for the Weekend” in the Honorable Mention section when radio played remixes of both by, coincidentally, SeeB in 2016?  Most, if not all, stations played the remix of “Pill” exclusively, a preference also reflected in sales.  While mainstream top 40 radio played the remix of “Hymn,” other formats stuck with the album version.  In terms of downloads, the original version of “Hymn” has outsold the SeeB remix.

In order to give you the whole picture, we must also look beyond Hot 100 proper.  That’s right, it’s time to put the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart to good use.  For example, despite reaching No. 21 at mainstream top 40 radio in 2013—a crossover hit by all accounts—Nikki Williams’ “Glowing” just missed making the top 100 (blame it on the open era).  By the way, “Glowing” is produced and co-written by Sandy Vee, who worked with fellow Frenchman Guetta on his One Love album.  Like Vee, Ali Payami and Cashmere Cat have had more success producing and writing for other people than with their own releases.

The 25-position Bubbling Under chart (on hiatus between 1985 and 1992) includes only songs that have not entered the top 100.  To avoid confusion, we’ve elected to list the top song on the Bubbling Under chart as No. 101 and so on.  Strictly speaking, if the Hot 100 were expanded beyond 100 positions, all the songs on the current Bubbling Under chart would have to compete with tracks that have fallen below No. 100.  In other words, our nomenclature is purely hypothetical.  Incredibly, Benny Benassi’s “Cinema” spent almost a year on the Bubbling Under chart between 2011 and 2012 without reaching the top 100, a feat only bested by two Pearl Jam songs in the late 1990s and Lil Baby’s “Freestyle” in 2018.

Note that all-genre Hot 100 airplay (also called Radio Songs) is a 50-position chart (was 75 positions deep from late 1990 to late 2013).  Mainstream top 40 (also known as Pop Songs) is limited to 40 positions.  The former chart is based on estimated size of airplay audience impressions (number of listeners); the latter is ranked by total airplay detections (number of spins).

Hot 100 and Dance Chart Changes and More

Trade publications that are in the business of measuring the popularity of music will tell you they want to be as accurate and precise as possible.  Removing the subjective opinion of gatekeepers helps.  So when Billboard and others started using data collected by point of sale system and radio airplay monitoring service in the early 1990s, it was a a big leap forward in terms of accuracy.

And it confirmed two discrepancies.  When the Hot 100 was based on manual playlists submitted by radio stations, the average chart run of a No. 1 hit was about 20 weeks.  But listeners knew radio stations would play the biggest hits for half a year or longer.  Well, we finally got proof.  Anyone comparing the music industry’s own sales certification with album charts had noticed million-selling country albums never reaching top 10 for some reason.  It turns out retail stores routinely underestimated the sales of country albums.  If they hadn’t taken humans out of the equation when they did, hip-hop albums by N.W.A and Cypress Hill would’ve likely suffered the same fate as country albums.

As consumer habits evolve, trade publications must re-evaluate their metrics.  Some eyebrows were raised when “The Fox” by Ylvis hit No. 6 on the Hot 100 in 2013.  After all, radio never played that song.  We didn’t get it either until we saw a father singing “The Fox” with his young child outside a library.  Billboard’s decision to include video streaming data earlier that year was the right one.  Based on robust sales at the time, Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” would’ve been a top 15 hit, but thanks to the addition of streaming data, it made chart history.  Nobody questioned it when that “Baby Shark” song hit the Hot 100 in 2019.

The Internet has disrupted industries large and small; the music business is just one prime example.  The digital age has meant certain chart achievements now come with a big asterisk.  The cast of Glee was able to place 207 Hot 100 entries, most of which stayed for just one week.  This could never have happened before the Internet.  No record company would order the release of 200-plus physical singles from a TV series.  Yes, Glee broke a record set by Elvis Presley, but when album cuts are eligible to chart, an artist can rack up Hot 100 entries fairly quickly nowadays.  Indeed, Drake has passed the Glee cast's total.  Beware that some chart records are no longer as meaningful as before.

And now that catalog titles are eligible to chart again if they rank in the top 50, that Mariah Carey seasonal favorite will continue to add a couple weeks at No. 1 every year like clockwork.  If they are honest, Billboard will have to name “All I Want for Christmas Is You” the biggest hit of all time in a few years.  Is that fair?  Is Chubby Checker ready to give up his crown?  Well, The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" was named the new No. 1 in 2021.  Click on Top Crossover Hits tab above and see why he and other future contenders won't have to worry about Carey after all.

Below are the Hot 100 chart’s milestones and some outside events that have had an impact on the U.S. national survey.  Note that the different components—sales, airplay, and streaming—that make up the Hot 100 are weighted differently depending on their significance.  For instance, when sales of commercial singles were down during the 1990s and most of the 2000s, the sales component counted less in the chart’s point system.

Why does television have such an impact on the music industry?  With cable networks and streaming services everywhere, it’s rare to find a TV show today that attracts a majority of households.  Super Bowl seems to be the only program that still pulls in huge numbers (over 90 million viewers in 2021).  Even the Academy Awards has dropped from 43.7 million viewers in 2014 to 23.6 million in 2020 (pre-lockdown).  But back when there were only three commercial networks, a TV show or TV appearance could attract many eyeballs even if a show is not highly-rated.  Ricky Nelson’s TV series definitely gave him an advantage over other teen idols at the time.  Of course, you still need compelling music to back up TV exposure.  For every Nelson there are more than a few Pink Ladies.  The role of television is increasingly played by the Internet.

Kudos to trade publications for launching dance genre charts fairly expeditiously by the mid-1970s.  We should also give Billboard credit for not giving up on its club charts during those times when dance music fell out of fashion.  That said, read how Billboard’s club chart can be improved.  Note that Record World published a national chart 17 months before Billboard.

We were pleasantly surprised when Billboard launched its dance radio chart in 2003 since there were fewer than 10 dance stations nationwide.  Contrast the magazine’s relatively swift action this time with the debut of its modern rock (now alternative) chart in 1988—that was at least a few years late.  We’ll never let Billboard live that one down.  They should add a few longtime Internet dance stations to the radio panel (they added a fly-by-night net station years ago).

The Early Years

To understand the backlash against dance music in the early 1980s, you need to appreciate how much disco dominated top 40 radio and pop charts in America by the late ’70s.  Record companies released dance remakes of everything from “Volare” to Beethoven and the I Love Lucy theme.  (Current dance labels are still following the same modus operandi.  Three of the biggest crossover hits of the 2000s are all remakes:  “Heaven,” “Listen to Your Heart,” and “Everytime We Touch.”  Steve Aoki has played his remix of “My Heart Will Go On” at festivals.  Guetta’s “Clap Your Hands” is based on a nursery rhyme.)  At the height of disco mania, even The Beach Boys, Kiss, and Wings got into the act.  And don’t forget Rod Stewart, The Rolling Stones, and Dolly Parton.

If you follow our Musical Treasure Hunt, you know which song we name as one of the first charted singles to represent the dance genre that came into its own during the 1970s (Billboard regional club charts debuted in October 1974—though Record World published a national survey first in March 1975).  No, it’s not “The Twist” or anything that literally referred to a specific dance.  Though young people danced to those records back in the day—and they helped define the sound of early rock and roll—something like “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock” seems more at home in a school gymnasium than a discotheque.  The record we pick is 1968’s “The Horse” (of course, of course).  When you consider the connection between this recording and MFSB, Philadelphia may be the birthplace of disco.

Without the benefit of a club chart, determining what is proto-dance music before October 1974 requires a bit of musicology.  We have to look at a song’s background—everything from the producers and writers to the record label and even the location.  But the best test is to listen for similarities between these songs and what came later.  If some of the proto-dance tracks sound a little slow, keep in mind The Chainsmokers’ “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Roses” are only 80 BPM and 100 BPM, respectively.

Why are the Bee Gees listed under Honorable Mention?  Long before the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack became a runaway bestseller, the Gibb brothers started out as a pop band in the ’60s with such hits as “I Started a Joke,” “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You,” and “(The Lights Went Out In) Massachusetts.”  So it’s easy to decide who is not a crossover dance artist when there’s an established pre-disco catalog to evaluate.

It often comes down to a judgment call in other situations.  Case in point:  Sylvester.  As hard as it is to imagine, one of the biggest club artists of the 1970s actually recorded two rock albums earlier.  Since he dove into dance music with such gusto and you can tell the rock genre really wasn’t a good fit—not to mention those records went nowhere—Sylvester should be treated as a dance artist first and foremost.  The beauty of the Internet means you can judge his rock music for yourself.  Now if he had recorded two R&B or gospel albums instead of rock, well, our decision would’ve been more difficult.

Not every singer can convincingly rock out, go country, or turn jazzy.  Prince is one of the few artists who can fit in the rock field as well as other genres.  It was a mistake for record companies to give Pink and Kelly Clarkson a rock-leaning sound in the past.  They’re no Pat Benatar or Joan Jett.

Pitfalls of the Net

Despite what you may have seen on AllMusic’s site, the source for some of Wikipedia’s chart information, Walter Murphy’s “A Fifth of Beethoven” did not make Billboard’s national club chart or Record World’s national club chart in 1976.  It only made two of Billboard’s regional charts.  We consulted Record Research, the publisher of U.S. chart books.

Top Crossover Hits

Before August 4, 1958, Billboard published separate sales and radio airplay charts.  Then the magazine introduced a combined sales/airplay chart called the Hot 100.  To celebrate this chart’s 50th anniversary, Billboard compiled the top 100 songs in 2008 and updated the listing five years later.  For the 60th anniversary in 2018, the list was expanded to 600 songs, which provided a more complete crossover picture.  This type of tabulation favors slow-building and long-lasting songs that spend the most weeks on the chart, especially in the upper region.  The magazine made an attempt to adjust for differences in chart patterns (turnover rates and such) during different eras—similar to how people adjust past movie grosses for inflation as a way to standardize data for comparison.

Looking at the placement of The Four Seasons' “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night),” we can tell its second chart run (remix version) is not included (54 weeks combined, No. 1 in 1976 and No. 14 in 1994).  Let's hope they'll fix this error in the future.  Below is our partial list of songs that have spent at least 30 weeks on the Hot 100—a rare feat before the 1990s—and therefore one should've expected to see in the top 600.  Indeed, Soft Cell set a record for the longest stay at the time in 1982.  The English duo held this title until 1994 when Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)" stayed for 45 weeks.

Go-Go's, "Our Lips Are Sealed" (30, No. 20, 1981)

We should also keep an eye on Kate Bush's "Running up That Hill (A Deal With God)" (40 weeks total thanks to a second run in 2022, No. 30/No. 3).  We suspect Billboard took a shortcut to this compilation by using data from its own annual top 100 chart.  There's one problem with this approach.  A song whose run is split evenly between two or more calendar years is lower in year-end ranking or may not show up at all, which would explain why most of the tracks above are missing.  (This should make you wonder about the accuracy of the songs that made the top 600.)  There may be a legitimate reason why the rest failed to make the cut.  Let's take a closer look at "Tainted Love."  The then-record-setting song likely racked up fewer points than expected because it spent a lot of time near the bottom of the chart (last five weeks at No. 97, for instance) and took too long to reach the top 40 (19 weeks).

Also missing are songs that never made the Hot 100 on a technicality.  Before December 1998, noncommercial singles were not eligible to chart.  In hindsight, Billboard should've suspended this rule during the 1990s.  But in their defense, the magazine and retailers such as Tower Records were trying their best to reverse the industry trend of withholding commercial releases in order to boost album sales.  About a dozen of these radio-only singles performed really well on the Hot 100's airplay component chart (published since December 1990).  So the following list deserves at least an honorable mention.  What should we call them?  The DQ (disqualified) Dozen?  Click on the Major Changes tab above and see notable non-singles and B-sides such as Madonna's "Into the Groove" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven."

The Wallflowers, "One Headlight" (70, No. 2, 1997)
No Doubt, “Don’t Speak” (63, No. 1, 1996)
Sugar Ray, “Fly” (59, No. 1, 1997)
Matchbox 20, "3 AM" (58, No. 3, 1998)
Matchbox 20, "Push" (52, No. 5, 1997)
The Cardigans, “Lovefool” (49, No. 2, 1997)
Goo Goo Dolls, “Iris” (47, No. 1, 1998) [14 weeks on Hot 100 after rule change]
Counting Crows, “Mr. Jones” (47, No. 5, 1994)
Natalie Imbruglia, “Torn” (44, No. 1, 1998) [2 weeks on Hot 100 after rule change]
Green Day, “When I Come Around” (40, No. 6, 1995)
Fastball, “The Way” (39, No. 5, 1998)
Matchbox 20, "Real World" (36, No. 9, 1998) [2 weeks on Hot 100 after rule change]
Fugees Featuring Bounty Killer, “Killing Me Softly” (35, No. 2, 1996)
The Rembrandts, “I’ll Be There for You” (31?, No. 1, 1995)
Will Smith, “Men in Black” (25, No. 1, 1997)

It would appear Billboard has opted to exclude holiday songs for this survey.  This is probably a good thing because no song can compete with Mariah Carey's seasonal hit in the streaming era.

In the meantime, we decided to highlight for you all the dance songs on the all-time list.  As always, we include every dance/electronic artist—even if the song is a ballad (see Stevie B.).  We also count dance tracks by non-dance artists (The Black Eyed Peas, for example).  To be as inclusive as possible, we add such quasi-dance songs as “Centerfold,” “Abracadabra,” “Play That Funky Music,” and “Best of My Love.”  In the early years of rock and roll, every other record was made for kids to dance to.  So “The Twist” isn’t technically a “crossover” hit in the modern sense.

We also decided to highlight all the alternative songs on this list.  Note the long drought until 2012.  No wonder Grammy voters took notice and named “Somebody That I Used to Know” record of the year and “We Are Young” song of the year.  Billboard did not publish a modern rock chart (now alternative) until 1988—about five years late.  Nickelback, 3 Doors Down, and Creed are really more mainstream rock than alternative, but their songs did do well on the alternative chart.
